Did the Broncos Double Dawkin$ $alary?

"Denver made it clear right away that I'm not a 'want' there, I'm a necessity," Dawkins said. "They feel they need me here to help them win right away. The feeling I got from [the Eagles] was this was a business deal. This was not business for me. I did not want to get to free agency. I have never gone to free agency. I had chances in the past to collect big bucks in the open market, but I did not want to get there."

Dawkins may have felt as though he was shortchanged in his previous dealings with the Eagles. He signed a two-year extension in 2006 that included $6.2 million in new money. That deal averaged just over $3 million per year...

It's pertty hard to believe that the Broncos needed Dawkins as much as he described...  Yet when the Broncos offer is almost double the Eagles what can one say?

Titans QB Simms to visit Broncos

Titans free agent QB Simms set to visit Broncos

By: Terry McCormick, Nashville City Paper

03/04/09 12:00

The Tennessee Titans still want to re-sign Chris Simms for the 2009, perhaps even to be their primary backup quarterback, but now have some competition for his services.

According to league sources, Simms is drawing interest from the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions, and is expected to travel to Denver for a visit with the Broncos on Wednesday.

Simms signed with the Titans after being released by Tampa Bay at the end of preseason last year.

[Chris] Simms came to the Titans and spent a good portion of the year regaining his strength after having to have his spleen removed in the aftermath an on-field injury in 2006 with the Buccaneers.

Now fully healthy, Simms is simply looking for a chance to prove himself again, either as a solid No. 2 quarterback or with a chance to compete for a starting role somewhere...

--------------------------------------------------------

We need a QB in Denver besides Patrick Ramsey who has not been a good fit.  Chris Simms is a year younger with less experience.  He is unproven.  Yet, finding a more experienced vet  with little or no future in Denver would be challenging especially after McDaniels fumble on Cutler.

Are the Denver Broncos a Joke Yet! YES!

Denver wardrobe fits Dawkins [... not hardly]

03/01/09 By Lindsay H. Jones - The Denver Post

...McDaniels and the Broncos landed Dawkins, a seven-time Pro Bowler who spent all of his 13-year career in Philadelphia, by convincing Dawkins this is not a rebuilding situation in Denver...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are the Broncos a Joke Yet?

YES!

Does Bowlen look like a fool hearty owner?  Yes!  Does Josh McDaniels look like a naive inexperienced very green rear coach?  Yes!  Does Brian Xanders come across as a general mess?  Yes!   Bowlen, McDaniels and Xanders are snake salesmen!  THE FANS IN DENVER ARE REAL UNHAPPY!!

I feel like Brian Dawkins is a fine human being.  There is no question he HAS BEEN a fine football player.  He has been to seven pro bowls.  Yet Dawkins is 35 years old.  He has played 13 seasons. He is NOT part of the Broncos long time futrue.  He may play good for one or two years then we need someone else.  Right now his numbers are good but one has to question how long will that last.  I wish Dawkins the very best here in Denver but I don't feel like he fits into our future or is a piece to our defensive puzzle.

I am not shocked that McDaniels and Xanders agreed on Dawkins?   I am not surprised they signed him to a guaranteed $7,200,000.00.

"He's exactly what the Denver Broncos are looking for," McDaniels said. "He wants to come to a place where he can win, and some place that wants him as much as he wants the

Broncos MUST learn to say NO to Aged Vets and Low Numbers...

Broncos start with a run at running backs

02/27/09

The Denver Post

The Broncos opened the free-agent period Thursday night by going after a pair of veteran running backs.

J.J. Harrington of the Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia's Correll Buckhalter are coming in for visits today.... The Broncos are also expected to meet with Miami Dolphins safety Renaldo Hill.

...Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson... was not signed to a new contract and hit the free-agent market as of 10:01 p.m. MST Thursday.

...Veteran center Tom Nalen will officially retire once he files the paperwork.

...The NFL revealed the Broncos carried $37 million of salary cap space into the opening of free agency Thursday night.

...And if all goes according to plan, the Broncos will use much of their budget by early next week. The top free- agent priorities are right cornerback, where St. Louis' Ron Bartell would be considered the best available, and safety, where Rodney Harrison, Will Allen and James Butler could draw interest.

Bartell did hit the market late Thursday expecting a five-year deal approaching $40 million. Nevertheless, the Broncos were among the teams who expressed interest in him. He will visit New Orleans today.

Other cornerbacks the Broncos may be considering are Tampa Bay's Phillip Buchanon and Pittsburgh's Bryant McFadden.

The Broncos were expected to call the agent of Tampa Bay receiver Michael Clayton.

Nose tackle is another priority position. Possibilities are Atlanta's Grady Jackson, Green Bay's Colin Cole and New England's Mike Wright.

____________________________________________________________________________

No on RB J.J. Arrington, he is 26 year old and only a back up.

No RB Correll Buckhalter he is 30 old and over the hill.

Yes on Tom Nalen's retirement.  Thank you Tom for your dedication the the great years.  We will miss you...

What a SHAME the Broncos did not sign Defensive End Kenny Peterson.  The best of luck to you Kenny!  The Broncos will probable go for Mike Wright. He is four years younger with similar numbers.

Yes on CB Ron Bartell, he is 27 and could be a very good acquisition for maybe 6 years 36 million.  I doubt if we get him.

No on CB Phillip Buchanon, he is 31 years old.  We need a younger player across from Champ!

No on CB Bryant McFadden he is 27 years old and has about the same numbers Dre' Bly.

No on WR Michael Clayton, he is 26 years old with only fair receptions. A number three receiver in a high powered offense should have at least 60 catches.

NO, No on DT Grady Jackson, he is 36 years old.   How can he help us?

No on DT Colin Cole he is 28 with only low tackles and sacks.  His numbers are better than Dewayne Robertson.

Yes on DE Mike Wright he is 26 with only low tackles and sacks but his numbers show he is coming on.

I didn't see much difference in Mike Kills column on 02/27/09  Free agency, rebuilding on the clock Michael seems a little young to have five years experience. Kill also states he had 80 catches as a rookie.  He has only had about 125 in the other four years.

Running backs taking a look at Broncos

02/27/09

By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News

The Broncos jumped into free agency Thursday night by setting up visits today with a pair of running backs... Arizona's J.J. Arrington [and] Philadelphia's Correll Buckhalter, according to John Rickert, who represents both players.

[...No] other current visits are planned, Rickert said.

Buckhalter has served primarily as Bryant Westbrook's backup with the Eagles. His career has been plagued by a series of knee injuries. He missed the 2002, 2004 and 2005 seasons. He carried 76 times for 369yards and two touchdowns last season, while adding 26 catches and two more scores.

"In Correll's case, he's looking for an opportunity to start," Rickert said. "I think if he gets that opportunity here, I think he'll make the most of it."

Arrington...[a second round pick] served mainly as a reserve for NFC champion Arizona. In his four seasons, he has rushed 183 times for 654 yards but has caught 91 balls, making him a prospective third-down option. Arrington can also help in the return game. He's averaged 23.6 yards on 58 kick returns in his career...

I didn't see much difference in Mike Kills column on 02/27/09  First, I would like to say thank you for all the many many wonderful years the Rocky Mount News gave us.   I will greatly miss you!

Let me call this as I see it. Arizona's J.J. Arrington is 26 years old.  He has been injured about half his career.  This sounds like the type of STUPID move the Broncos would make.

Philadelphia's Correll Buckhalter is 30 years old. Give me some slack.  This is double boneheaded!!

Free agency, rebuilding on the clock  He lists WR Michael Clayton  as a rookie.  The NFL lists his with five years experienc.  Michael seems a little young to have five years experience. Kill also states he had 80 catches as a rookie.  He has only had about 125 in the other four years.

Broncos look for free-agent help in secondary

02/25/09 - By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News

The Denver Broncos appear to be heavily focused on rebuilding its secondary in free agency. The Broncos likely will not only try to land one of the top cornerbacks on the market - the group is led by Buffalo's Jabari Greer, Tampa Bay's Phillip Buchanon, Pittsburgh's Bryant McFadden and St. Louis' Ronald Bartell - but will try to buttress its thin reserves at the position with an experienced veteran.

The Broncos also are making it known they will be players in the safety market. Miami's Yeremiah Bell, New England's James Sanders and Tampa Bay's Jermaine Phillips are at the top of the list, though Bell is working toward a new deal with the Dolphins. Cleveland's Sean Jones and Oakland's Gibril Wilson are also on the radar.

__________________________________________________________________________

It would not be to difficult to find a cornerback or safety better than we already have.  We have a lot of room for improvement. We shouldn't have to spent to much to get a better player than we have.  Also I would have little or no issues in letting both of the Bailey go...

Broncos in running for back

02/25/09 - With free agency starting this week and the draft coming in April, Denver

has two ways to fill an area of need.

By Mike Klis - The Denver Post

INDIANAPOLIS -- ...the most bizarre injury epidemic in franchise history, the Broncos used seven tailbacks last season. Six started. None gained as many as 345 yards.

Even in the years of the 14-game schedules, even in the strike-shortened, nine-game season of 1982, the Broncos always had at least one running back gain at least 345 yards.

...it's no secret the team's greatest offensive need is at running back. A back who can break off a long run in the first half, and protect a lead by moving the sticks in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos could get a proven running back in the free-agent market that opens Thursday at 10:01 p.m. MST...

____________________________________________________________________________________

Yes, the Broncos could get a proven running back but they won't...  The Broncos success at running back has ALWAYS come through the draft.  Think about it Little, Winder, Wilhite, Davis, Portis, Anderson etc.  The Broncos have a history of drafting great running backs.  ON THE OTHER SIDE think about Travis Henry...    GET REAL! The Broncos do not need another Travis Henry... While it's true that we could have won two more games without to much effort had we had a solid running back or better defense the facts are we have done extremely poor in the free agent market. The free agent market has been anything but free for the Broncos. IT HAS COST US PLENTY!!
